Help at Home – Information Guide

This year is very important for year six children. It is their last year in Primary School and the year in which they take their end of Key Stage SATS.

The Renewed Framework has placed greater emphasis on mental maths and the quick recall of number facts, so tables will be very important. This term we are concentrating our efforts on all four standard number operations and how to apply them to ‘real life’ problems. We will be using calculators to solve problems especially involving money and measures. You could try checking the supermarket bill! We also have whole school targets in Maths looking at subtraction and accurate drawing of shapes.

This term in Literacy we will be looking at Macbeth as part of our work on plays and established authors. Later in the term we will also look at ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. These are both difficult texts and any assistance with reading the stories would be beneficial. There will be an emphasis, in writing on punctuation, especially Capital Letters.

In I.C.T. we will be conducting research using the internet and looking at spreadsheets, using publisher and powerpoint. Groups of children will be using the computer to complete work in other subjects during the school day.

In Science this term we will be covering Changing Materials, Major Organs in the Body, Micro – Organisms, The Earth in Space and Forces.Topics may not be covered in this particular order due to the availability of the shared resources.

Our humanities topic this term is The Tudors. We will aim to study the lifestyle and culture of the era. There is a visit to

Hampton Court
planned for this term and details will follow soon.

Homework for Y6 pupils should be two and a half hours a week. Therefore, homework will be set from Monday to Thursday inclusive, being small,  more relevant activities which should take between 20 and 30 minutes to complete. There is no homework at the weekend other than your child’s own reading. Your support is valuable and greatly appreciated in this area.

Y6 have page on the school website where dates, homework, notes and documents can be found – www.st-lawrence.ik.org – enabling parents to find things out, even after school!
